Thought for Tuesday...
For some reason, I didn't wake up energized and excited for the work week after having a day off on Monday. You'd think that after extra rest, and lots of outdoor time in the sun, I would be ready for the work part of my week.
Instead, I felt sluggish and a little moody. I was frustrated because we had bought a new washer and dryer only three years ago and our dryer broke. After spending the whole morning waiting for a technician to come fix it, he told me the motor is broken and we have to order a part, and wait longer for our dryer to be repaired.
In frustrating situations like these, it is so easy to let my emotions get the better of me and start in a negative, downward spiral. It is easy to get grumpy and take it out on the people around me and get them grumpy too!
One very important spiritual discipline is what Paul writes to us in Philippians 4:4-9
4 "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you."
Today, I need to practice this--not just understand this mentally. I am to rejoice--not in a broken dryer, or losing half a day's work to a technician--but to rejoice in God.
Instead of burning so much negative energy on a frustrating situation, I can instead burn positive energy on God's goodness, God's provision of good things, and how much Jesus has done for me.
Paul continues by reminding us that instead of getting frustrated, angry, upset, or ______, we can turn to God in prayer. We can talk to him about those messy things, and ask Him to help us deal with these events his way.
I have seen that many times, the situation does not change, but my perspective is the thing that changes the most. And a healthier mindset, a healthier perspective will allow me to continue on my week without all that negative energy dragging me, and everyone around me into that death spiral.
Praying that your Tuesday has gone better than mine. Praying for you right now, and for us right now, that we would all GROW to be more like Jesus in these few weeks together.
